It is a place where every turn reveals a new view of the beautiful nature of the Skaraborg region. Höjentorp is not just a nature reserve in the municipality of Skara; it is a place where Swedish history feels present in every oak-covered hill and along the glistening shorelines.
About Höjentorp
Höjentorp is one of the most distinctive sites in the Valle area (Vallebygden). The landscape is characterised by 'kame' topography, formed by the retreat of the inland ice, which created the characteristic rounded hills and deep hollows that are now filled with mirror-like lakes. Today, the area is a nature reserve and home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, where ancient giant oaks stand as silent witnesses to bygone eras.
Höjentorp is most famous for its royal heritage. This was once the site of Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie's magnificent castle, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1722. Today, only the ruins of this once-grand structure remain, yet the site still possesses a grandeur that attracts visitors year-round. The contrast between the historical stone foundations and the wild nature creates an almost magical atmosphere.
Things to do at Höjentorp
For those visiting Höjentorp, there are many ways to experience the area. The primary activity is hiking. Several trails wind through the landscape, taking you past both lakes and historical sites. It is a popular spot for birdwatching, picnics, and nature photography. At Ruinberget, you can look out over Lake Ormasjön and imagine how the castle once towered over the landscape.
