About Axevalla Hus
On a peninsula in Lake Husgärdessjön, you will find the ruins of an ancient fortress called Axevalla Hus. This castle was once one of Sweden's most formidable and important defensive structures during the early Middle Ages. While official records mention Axevalla Hus in the 14th century, oral traditions suggest that King Inge the Elder held court here as early as the late 11th century.
About Axevalla Hus
Today, only high earthworks remain where the walls once stood. However, if you look out from the shore, you can still see the remnants of a defensive pile bridge made of massive oak trunks, dated back to 1288, which protected the castle from sea-based attacks. As you wander through the area, you can also explore the remains of two outer fortifications, Trågenborg and Bjurbackarna. The fortress has not been formally excavated since the 1870s, but its history is filled with sieges, fires, and legendary adventures.
