About Hindens rev
Hiking out onto Hindens rev is an experience like no other in the Swedish natural landscape. This improbable strip of land, shaped by the forces of the ice age, creates a natural pier that divides the waters of Lake Vänern and leads the visitor straight out towards the open horizon. Here, you are surrounded by the sound of lapping waves on both sides as the path narrows the further you go, providing a rare sense of freedom and a close encounter with the Västergötland elements.
About Hindens rev
Hindens rev is a terminal moraine, part of the mighty ice marginal line created thousands of years ago. This geological formation stretches approximately five kilometres into Lake Vänern and is only a few metres wide in places. The nature on the reef is characterised by hardy pines, weathered stones, and a rich flora clinging to the lean soil. It is a nature reserve that attracts visitors all year round, but it shows its most dramatic side during the summer months when the contrast between the deep blue water and the green forest is at its peak.
Can you hike all the way out on Hindens rev?
Yes, there is a hiking trail along the entire reef to its outermost point, known as Hindens udde. The walk is a unique experience but requires some concentration as the terrain consists of roots and rocks. The further out you go, the wilder the environment becomes, and at high tide, some parts of the tip may temporarily disappear beneath the water's surface. The entire round trip is approximately ten kilometres long and offers fantastic photo opportunities and places for reflection along the way.
Is Hindens rev suitable for children and families?
Hindens rev is an exciting destination for adventurous children. Balancing on stones and discovering small coves along the sides is usually very popular. However, one should be aware that the path is not suitable for prams or pushchairs, as the ground is uneven with many rocks and roots. For families using a baby carrier or with children accustomed to walking in the woods, it is a fantastic day trip. There are several spots near the start of the reef well-suited for a simple picnic if you do not wish to walk all the way to the tip.
Tips for visitors
- Good footwear is essential: Since the terrain is rocky and uneven, sturdy hiking shoes or boots are recommended over sandals.
- Pack your rucksack: There are no services out on the reef, so bring plenty of water and snacks to enjoy during breaks along the way.
- Watch the wind: As the reef is completely exposed, the wind can pick up quickly. A windbreaker is often good to have, even on sunny days.
- Respect the Right of Public Access: As a nature reserve, it is important to follow local regulations to preserve the unique environment for the future.
Practical information
There is a car park adjacent to the start of the reserve where the hiking trail begins. During the peak of summer, Hindens rev is a popular destination in Västergötland, so it can be a good idea to arrive early in the day. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Please remember that there is no refuse collection in the wild, so everything you take out must be brought back home. The area is accessible for visits year-round, but bear in mind that weather conditions on Lake Vänern can shift rapidly.
