Here, you move silently through the water on nature's own terms, in an environment that offers both relaxation and small adventures for the whole family.
About Herrtorps qvarn and Canoeing on the River Flian
Herrtorps qvarn is the starting point for a scenic paddle along the Flian. The river winds through a well-preserved landscape and offers different types of experiences depending on which direction you choose to paddle. The most popular route goes upstream towards Hornborgasjön. This is a calm and pleasant stretch that is excellent for beginners, families, or those who simply want to enjoy a cosy picnic trip without heavy lifting. During spring and early summer, the area is particularly vibrant, as the bird sanctuary in the lake allows you to experience nature from a distance up to the dam at the lake's outlet.
For those seeking a slightly more challenging experience, you can—conditions permitting—paddle downstream towards Svansvik. Here, the river meanders sharply and the current is stronger, providing more dynamic paddling through a beautiful oak landscape. Regardless of which path you choose, the Flian is a place where you get truly close to the wildlife; if you are lucky, you might spot both kingfishers and traces of beaver along the banks.
How long does it take?
The time required depends entirely on the route you choose and the pace you keep. A trip upstream towards Hornborgasjön and back to the mill usually takes around five hours of active paddling. If you only want to get out on the water for a short while, it is easy to paddle for a bit and then turn back whenever you feel ready. The downstream trip to Svansvik takes about an hour and a half but requires planning for transport back.
What do you need to bring?
When you venture out onto the Flian, it is good to be prepared for a day in nature:
- Seat pads: Especially if you have children sitting on the floor of the canoe for extra stability.
- Waterproof bags: To protect your mobile phone, car keys, and spare clothes from water splashes.
- Snacks and drinks: There are no organised rest areas, but plenty of riverside meadows where you can go ashore for a break.
- Sun protection and a hat: The sun is often stronger than you think when you are out on open water.
- Life jackets for small children: There are a number of jackets available to borrow, but if you have your own that you know fit children under 40 kg, it is recommended to bring them.
